Rona has been a professional artist for over
twenty-five years; first as a tapestry weaver, then as a painter in watercolour
and finally using acrylic and mixed media.
"During my secondary education I received virtually no
art education at all. It was not until I was 18 that I discovered an interest
in the subject. However by that time it was too late to pursue it so I chose a
career as a primary teacher taking an additional qualification in special
educational needs.
I continued to draw and weave whenever I could until I
finally left teaching to have a family. At this point I saw an opportunity to
exhibit my work through galleries, also becoming a member of the Scottish Craft
Centre in Edinburgh.
Over the years I have exhibited in many galleries in The UK
and my work has also been bought by collectors in Europe, America and
Australia. See the Exhibitions page for details.
I believe that art is about visual impact, not words. As a
teacher my job is to communicate. So too is the role of the artist.
Consequently I describe my work as being simply 'about
nature'. It's about changing weather, seasons and places I know and love. It's
about the passing of time.
I use mainly acrylic paint with a range of mediums. Each
piece is improvisational with no pencil marks on the paper or canvas and will
be worked until I'm satisfied with it, however long it takes."
