Madeleine Gardiner grew up in Edinburgh, after finishing school she attended Leeds College of Art for the Foundation Diploma followed by Edinburgh College of Art for her undergraduate degree in Painting. Madeleine’s work is comprised of a blend of memories, no painting is of one particular place, and each painting is a composite of her experiences.
"Wild spaces, memory and atmosphere are key areas of concern in my work. I often create composite landscapes, built from memories that I feel are connected through a shared aesthetic. The simultaneous push and pull between paint appearing as paint and what it is representing allows me to be selective with the information and details I include in each piece of work. The way in which elements within a landscape are altered by light is my primary focus; every decision I make is centred on reacting to this. I have a fascination with depth, which had led to an on-going attempt to achieve a sense of immersion through paint."
