John was born in Kenya in 1962 and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee from 1981-85, graduating with B.A.Hons in Ceramics. This was followed by a one year post-graduate course, also at Dundee. Since leaving college, he worked in several locations in Scotland before setting up his present workshop near Dollar. In 1995 he received a grant from the Scottish Arts Council to develop extruded forms and in the same year was given an Artist in Residence post at Glasgow School of Art.Over the years, John has developed and refined his distinctive range of thrown work. All the work is made using a white stoneware clay, and the glaze quality is achieved using cobalt wood-ash glazes with over-sprays of copper and titanium.
"My emphasis is on multifunctional pots, which are not only to be valued as pieces of art, but are at home in the kitchen and in the showcase. A desire that the pots convey a classic simplicity and elegance, understated and uncluttered, is expressed through the forms and glazes used."
